Blog from livejournal.com

Below you can read a blog I found on the internet.  I copied it directly onto this page for viewers.  It is the first blog I have found and I was really happy to find discussions like this out there that ensured me that our environment is comfortable and our staff is as friendly as I am always bragging they are.  The only negative comment on this page is in reference to parking, however, we have recently made steps to almost completely eliminate the parking issues.  I'm not sure who wrote this blog but thanks for the positive feedback :-)

Alter Ego Fitness?

So my fiance and I are seriously considering joining a gym in the area, but we're a little hesitant to sign up with GHFC, and it's just such a huge, intimidating facility that always seems packed to the brim, not to mention that the memberships are pricey.  Alter Ego is running a really good deal on year-long memberships, and we're thinking about possibly signing up.  So, for those of you who have had or currently have memberships there, how do you like it? Is it female-friendly? (as in, not just a gym for big, beefy weight-lifter guys?) How are the classes? Is it usually crowded?

Basically, it would be really helpful to hear about some real experiences with Alter Ego before we make a decision. Or, for that matter, if you have other recommendations for gyms in the area, that would be welcome advice too.

Thanks in advance!!

I was looking into GHFC before I noticed the deal Alter Ego was having (I also live much closer to Alter Ego) -- and I have to say, I'm really happy with my decision.

The staff and all of the members are very friendly and considerate. It's very well looked after, all of the weights go back in the right place and everything there is in good condition. They have quite a few cardio machines and there are always two or three available.
The gym is also very female-friendly. Everyone seems very polite and friendly.

I haven't been to any of the classes they have, but the trainers all seem great and for the most part seem to know what they're doing.

Now, on the negative side of things: The parking lot is kind of small and they share it with some restaurants, so it can be hard to find parking if you go at the wrong time -- that can get kind of frustrating, but it's never been a HUGE deal for me. Also, on the same note, the gym itself can get really busy, so if you go during peek times you may have to wait to use a bench.

I have kind of an odd question... are they fat person friendly? There's another gym here in town that I won't mention that treated me so incredibly rudely, and I couldn't help but think it was because of my weight. (It's very student oriented, and seems like the patrons were there more to ogle eachother and pick up dates than to actually work out and get in shape.)

Yech, I'm sorry you got treated that way! I'd say it definitely is, the people I've encountered at the gym have all been very encouraging to one another. I'd say people will either be encouraging or just silent, so there's no rude behavior going on, from what I've seen.

With a very small number of exceptions, everyone there seems very respectful of one another, never see anyone trying to pick people up there.

P.S.: Love your icon!

The gym shows lots of diversity in both age and weight. I find it so refreshing to work out in a gym whose age range appears to go from 18-70+, and see a similar range of weights and intensity levels.

I don't have a membership there, although half my roller derby team works out there. I've heard nothing but positive things and would join in a heartbeat if I had the money :)

I love love love this gym. They are so nice and so helpful. I never have to wait for an elliptical machine, and I can even watch silly daytime TV while I work out.
